The Speaker’s ‘Democracy For All’ Small Grant Scheme has now been launched. The initiative aims to increase the understanding of Parliamentary democracy across the UK through the delivery of local constituency arts and educational projects.
The Speaker chairs debates in The House of Commons where MPs consider and propose new laws, as well as scrutinise government policies. This role is currently fulfilled by the Rt Hon Sir Lindsay Hoyle MP.
The scheme has been launched by The Speaker’s Art Fund which came into existence in 1929 and was registered as a charitable trust in 2004. This is because The Art Fund isn’t funded through the taxpayer but through income from the sales of Christmas cards and tours of the Speaker’s House.
The initiative will offer an opportunity for constituents to bid for £500 to deliver their projects. The first rounds of applications are open from today until 24th August. Only one entry from each constituency can be considered, and it must include a letter of recommendation from your local MP.
MP for Bury North, James Daly says:
"I think this is a fantastic opportunity for the people in Bury North as it allows them to engage with democracy in a creative way. I look forward to receiving the applications."
Please contact James Daly MP at www.jamesdaly.org.uk/contact for an application form, the most impressive entry will be put forward with his endorsement.
