Bury North MP, James Daly, has welcomed the Government announcement of the new National Cyber Strategy, which will see £2.6 billion invested in UK science and technology.
The Government announced this investment to secure the UK's position as a leading cyber power across the globe, which Mr Daly is keen to see benefit residents in Bury.
Cyber security is fundamental to the UK's future national security and to strengthening the country's defences – the integrated review, published earlier this year, set out how the UK is enhancing its cyber capabilities.
That is why a record £2.6 billion is being invested into cyber as part of the national cyber strategy, which will set out how the Government are solidifying the UK's position as a global cyber power. This investment includes £114 million for the National Cyber Security Programme and a new National Cyber Force based in Lancashire.
Commenting on the announcement, Mr Daly said:
"Investment in cyber and technology is crucial to both our future national security, but also for young people entering the jobs market today and in the coming years."
Mr Daly, who has been campaigning for Bury College to receive Institute of Technology status, linked how the IoT bid could ensure residents and students can benefit from this investment.
"I've been campaigning and lobbying Ministers to grant Bury College, with the University of Salford, Institute of Technology (IoT) status. This would ensure students in Bury are able to get the skills and education, supported by outstanding employer partners including GCHQ, to enter and excel in a fast-moving, emerging jobs market."
"I hope the IoT bid will be successful, and Bury, Ramsbottom and Tottington can be key players in the Government's Levelling Up and Cyber agenda."
"The new National Cyber Force based in Lancashire is a welcome announcement. Just last month, I asked Minister's what progress has been made in delivering jobs outside of London, and I believe this goes some way to bringing those new, digital age jobs to us living in Bury, Ramsbottom and Tottington."
Steve Barclay, the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, commented:
"The new National Cyber Strategy transforms how the UK will advance its national interests in cyberspace and is a major milestone following the publication of the Integrated Review earlier this year."
"It sets out a clear vision for building cyber expertise in all parts of the country, strengthening our offensive and defensive capabilities and ensuring the whole of society plays its part in the UK's cyber future and comes with record funding to match."
Further support will also be available to help regional firms to become world-class exporters, including through a new online "Export Faculty" Hub for SMEs in the defence and security sector. Exporters and those wanting to export across Bury will also be able to participate in James Daly MP's next Parliamentary Export Programme, which will run next year and follow two very successful sessions in 2021.
The National Cyber Strategy Plans are supported by the £2.6 billion investment in cyber announced in this year's Spending Review.
