On Wednesday MP’s from across the House of Commons, including Bury North’s James Daly, took the oath of allegiance to His Majesty King Charles III. The oath of allegiance was in use as far back as the signing of the Magna Carta in 1215 and versions have been used all the way to the present day.
Under the Parliamentary Oaths Act 1866, members of both Houses of Parliament are required to take the oath upon taking their seat in Parliament, after a general election and after the passing of the monarch.
James Daly, MP for Bury North, said:
“It was truly an honour to take the oath of allegiance to His Majesty, King Charles III in Parliament and serve the people of Bury in Parliament.
The moment was a poignant one as I not only remembered Her late Majesty The Queen who was an inspiration to us all with her dedication to duty and the people of this nation. But also to the future and the beginning of the reign of His Majesty.
God Save The King”
