Bury’s local Member of Parliament, James Daly, will use his 20 years of experience in the legal sector in his new appointment as Parliamentary Private Secretary for the Ministry of Justice.
Following 16 years as a Criminal Legal Aid Defence Solicitor in Bury Magistrates Courts and beyond, to more latterly as a partner in a firm of solicitors in Bury, James Daly MP was last week appointed to the PPS role to the Ministry of Justice.
Parliamentary Private Secretaries (PPS’s) are a key link between Minister’s and MP’s when it comes to policy formulation. The unpaid role also includes an emphasis on ensuring that Members of Parliament can access Ministers to resolve issues relating to Ministry of Justice matters in their constituencies. The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) is responsible for the judiciary, the court system, prisons and probation and works together with other government departments and agencies to bring the principles of justice to life for everyone in society. From civil courts, tribunals and family law hearings to criminal justice, prison and probation services. The MoJ works to ensure that sentences are served, and offenders are encouraged to turn their lives around and become law-abiding citizens.
As a member of both the Justice Select Committee and Home Affairs Select Committee, Mr Daly has already been using his expertise and experience in the field to help inform Government policy. He will continue to do so in his new role.
Mr Daly stated:
“It is an honour to have been appointed to this role.”
“The Ministry of Justice is at the forefront of Government efforts to deal with the ongoing court’s backlog and proactively engaging with the challenges that face the justice system in our nation today.”
“When I joined the Home Affairs Select Committee, I said, ‘Residents in my constituency are rightly concerned about crime and disorder in our area’. Through my new role as PPS, I hope to be able to feed the concerns of my residents and concerns of other MP’s residents into Ministers to how our justice system can work best to reduce crime and reduce the causes of crime.”
The Secretary of State, Rt Hon Dominic Raab MP, described Mr Daly joining as a PPS as a “great appointment” and commenting online, Heywood and Middleton MP, Chris Clarkson, added, “A brilliant appointment. James understands better than most the value of a robust, fair and restorative justice system.”
To comply with well-established Parliamentary conventions, Mr Daly has stood down from both the Justice Select Committee and Home Affairs Select Committee and as Vice-Chair to the APPG for Legal Aid. Mr Daly will continue as Chair of four All-Party Parliamentary Groups for Youth Employment, Northern Culture, Tenanted Pubs and Nursery Schools, Nursery and Reception Classes.
