Local MP, James Daly, today visited the University of Salford which successfully gained Institute of Technology status, working in collaboration with Bury College.
Mr Daly played a key role in lobbying Government to award the Institute of Technology status to the University of Salford and Bury College, which will transform skills provision in key sectors across the area.
Currently over 1,100 students from Bury North attend the University of Salford, with around 80% of those remaining in the area when they graduate and start work. With this further investment to deliver higher technical skills, more young people from our area will join the skilled workforce needed to capitalise on our region’s strengths and ensure they can live and work where they were brought up.
Speaking after the visit Mr Daly said
“We have fantastically gifted students in our area, and often we see students having to move away to work for bigger companies. With the Institute of Technology, including Bury College, and working with employers such as GCHQ and Siemens, I’m hopeful we can retain the talent in our area”
“The University of Salford are doing some fantastic work – especially around science engineering and energy – and this investment in skills and opportunities is crucial to ensuring everyone, no matter their background is given the opportunity to reach their full potential.”
The University of Salford is currently working on many exciting projects with practical real-world benefits. Energy House 2.0, their flagship net zero buildings research facility is now up and running and they are nearing completion on a new School of Science Engineering and Environment Building, where the next generation in STEM subjects will be trained.
Work is also underway on a new North of England Robotics Innovation Centre, which will support businesses across the ten boroughs of Greater Manchester and beyond to adopt digital technologies to raise productivity and create jobs.
Mr Daly commented
“All of this innovation, all this investment, is critical to ensuring young people and businesses have what they need to thrive. I’m so pleased that it’s happening here – with Bury College as part of the IoT”
